A dress Judy Garland wore on screen in The Wizard of Oz has sold for $480,000 at auction in the US.

The blue gingham dress is one of several produced for the 1939 film but one of just a handfulthat saw screen time.

It had last auctioned in 1981, when it was purchased by the consignors, a New York couple, for just $2,000.

That represents a 19.3% pa rise in value, a figure that will surely have investment-minded movie memorabilia collectors taking note.

The blouse and pinafore is one of very few dresses produced for Dorothy that exists in its entirety.

Dorothy memorabilia has a strong track record.

A similar dress worn by Garland during test shots from the first two weeks of filming made $1.2m at the Debbie Reynolds collection sale last year, where one of five extant pairs of Dorothy's red slippers realised $627,300.

The Icons & Idols 2012: Hollywood sale on November 9-10 also featured a purple wool skirt which Marilyn Monroe wore in 1954's River of No Return. It achieved $50,000, a realisation matched by a Steve McQueen racing jacket.

A green dress worn by Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music sold for $38,400.

The auction is further evidence of the high demand for the finest pieces of Hollywood memorabilia. You can see our collection of movie autographs for sale here.

Elsewhere at the auction a slice of cake from Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding last year achieved $1,375, as did a slice from the nuptials of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
