Jorge de Brito's legendary art collection may bring more than $14.3m at Tajan

The Portuguese businessman had a world class collection of Chinese and Portuguese antiques

On Saturday, October 22th, 2011, Tajan will auction over seventy works from the collection of Jorge de Brito. The collection is widely recognized for its exceptional quality and has an estimated value of 8m to 10m (up to $14.3m).

It is likely that the auction results will exceed this estimate, considering the rare quality of the works involved. The collection represents several interests: painting, furniture and objets d'art, Asian art (including statues, porcelain and jade).

Jorge de Brito's erudition and taste were the result of a lifelong education that began in childhood under a father with strong ties to all the antiques dealers of his day.

Jorge de Brito loved unique objects, always looking for unique pieces preferably related to Portuguese history. He would fight and win bids at auction against emissaries from Hong Kong sent for Ming porcelain.

Beyond painting, his collection included Chinese porcelains, Portuguese vertu, a vast library broadened further by the purchase of that of Commander Ernesto Vilhena, and a wealth of rare gold coins and furniture.

This passion resulted in a diverse collection of over 3,000 works, the strongest of which was dedicated to paintings, specifically Baroque, Portuguese nautraliste, and 20th century.

A selection of the most significant works from the auction will be exhibited throughout the summer: in Monte Carlo in July and August; in Brussels in September.

All the works featured in this exceptional sale will be on display at Tajan in Paris from October 5, 2011 to October 22, 2011. Watch this space for more news of the exciting sale.
