Jordan's Flu Game trainers will highlight December 11 sale

Jordan's Flu Game trainers from 1997 will lead the Holiday Catalogue sale at Grey Flannel Auctions

Michael Jordan's 1997 "Flu Game" trainers are to highlight Grey Flannel Auctions' Holiday Catalogue sale in Long Island on December 11.

The trainers are from the famous June 11, 1997 game five of the NBA finals, when the Chicago Bulls took on Utah Jazz. Jordan took to the court with a high fever and proceeded to play one of the best games of his career, scoring 38 points, seven rebounds and five assists - winning the title for the Bulls.

The shoes were signed by Jordan and given to a ball boy following the game, who is now consigning them 16 years on.

Grey Flannel's director of operations, Michael Russek, told Auction Central News, an auction news website: "We were approached by the Utah Jazz ball boy [from the Flu Game] because of our affiliation with the Basketball Hall of Fame.

"He never thought about selling them before now. Recently he realized that he was getting a little older and was more curious than anything to see if people still cared about the story."

In the past memorabilia pertaining to Jordan has changed hands for large sums - with an Eastern jersey worn by him in the 1991 All Star game selling for $55,000 at Grey Flannel last year.

The auction features memorabilia from a variety of US sporting greats. It includes Larry Csonka's 1979 Miami Dolphins jersey and a 1928 New York Yankees baseball signed by Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Jacob Ruppert.

Sugar Ray Leonard's gloves from his 1984 bout with Kevin Howard are also featured - the first fight in which Leonard was knocked to the ground.
