John Lennon jacket hammers for $11,000 at Hansons Auctioneers

A jacket worn by John Lennon in the 1960s has sold in a UK auction this afternoon

A Sgt. Pepper style jacket believed to have been worn by John Lennon in the late 1960s has sold this afternoon (August 22)for a hammer price of6,900 ($10,813) at Hansons Auctioneers in Derby, UK.

John Lennon Teal Jacket Nehru The sale saw a bargain price for the buyer, with Lennon's clothing normally selling for much more

The jacket was removed from Lennon's Tittenhurst Park home in 1971 by Jo Jo Johns, following Lennon's move to the US. As PA to the Beatles, Johns was charged with clearing Lennon's house.

Sometime inthe early 1970s, Johns then gave the jacket to her friend Tony Goddard for his birthday. Goddard commented: "The jacket was given to me at one of my birthday parties in the early 1970s, Jo Jo was a good friend and she had acquired a lot of abandoned belongings from the band members."

"Jo Jo did have John Lennon's Radford Mini which was destroyed by her partner Jeremy Sumner in a motor accident. Jo Jo also had Lennon's round bath for a time."

The jacket is resonant of the Sgt. Pepper album cover, released in 1967. A three quarter length piece with a mandarin collar and flared sleeves, it is certainly in keeping with the more flamboyant style adopted by the band as they approached the end of their time together.

Comparatively, the 6,900 price tage represents a bargain for the buyer, with a jacket that Lennon wore for a 1966 LIFE magazine shoot selling for $240,000 in 2011.
