JH Dugan baseball cards make $143,500 at Heritage Auctions

A complete and unique set of JH Dugan baseball cards led the first day of sales

The only known set of 1914 JH Dugan baseball cabinet cards has sold well on the first day of Heritage Auctions' November 7-9 Sports Collectible Catalog Auction in Dallas.

JH Dugan baseball calendar cardsThe production of the cards was never realised, making this the only original set to exist

The complete set of 12, which were previously unknown to the hobby, sold for $143,400. Named after the Rutland, Vermont advertiser that funded the cards, the project stalled in its infancy and just this original proof set of cards exists.

The cards are each punched with two holes at the top, allowing them to be hung together to form a calendar. Included are stars of the day from a range of teams, including the legendary Ty Cobb.

Also selling well was the 1952 Topps Eddie Mathews card, gradedPSA NM-MT8, which made $41,825.

The first day of sales at Heritage Auctionsfocused on sports trading cards, while the remainder of the auction will offer sports memorabilia, including the Stan Musial collection.
