According to Bonhams' description, the piece is made from fruitwood and mixed media. It beat the prior sale record also set by Salim of $336,000, achieved back in March 2008.

Many experts regard Salim as the 'father' of modern Arab art,a view which was no doubtconfirmedby Monday's sale.

Overall all, Bonhams' auction saw total sales of $4.4m with 60% of lots sold - the latest sign, as we have previously reported, that India's wealthy are increasingly turning to art investments.
