Jay-Z signed Nets jersey sells for almost $2,000 in charity auction

Ten Jay-Z signed Brooklyn Nets jerseys were sold for the Shawn Carter Foundation

A Brooklyn Nets jersey signed by hip-hop superstar Jay-Z has sold as part of an online charity auction which closed yesterday (October 31).

The auction, which was held on the official NBA Auctions website, saw 10 of the new Brooklyn Nets jerseys sell, each signed "PEACE Jay-Z" on the tag sewn onto the hem. The highest selling jersey reached $1,910, with profits to benefit the Shawn Carter (Jay-Z's real name) Foundation.

Carter's charity was established in order to support those in need of financial assistance to gain a higher education. The foundation has given over $1.6m in scholarships since its inception to students across the country.

The jerseys, of which there were five white and five black examples, were part of a limited run of 800created for Jay-Z's eight shows at the Nets' Barclays Centre stadium to mark its opening - each was printed with "Carter 4" on the reverse.

The Brooklyn-born rapper has long been a fan of the Nets (formerly in NewJersey)and is even a part-owner of the team. Unfortunately, the Nets have had to postpone their long-awaited debut gamein Brooklyndue to Hurricane Sandy.

The sale is the latest of Jay-Z's auctions for charity, with the Maybach '57 that he and Kayne West drove in the video for the Grammy Award-winning track Otis selling in March for $60,000 to raise funds for Save the Children.
