The circa 1889 watch, which is engraved with Dean's initials, made an impressive $41,888 - a 318.8% increase on its $10,000 high estimate.

James Dean reportedly bought the watch in 1951, while still attempting to find his feet as a Hollywood actor.

It soon became one of his most treasured possessions, accompanying him on the sets of various films, including East of Eden. To hide his initials while filming, the watch was given an alternative cover.

Afterachieving success as a Hollywood heartthrob,Dean gifted the watch to Warner Bros staffer Tillie Starriet, whom he affectionately called "Mom".

The strong results seen by the watch are further proof of the James Dean Effect.
