More impressive sales from Sotheby's, as James Bond's From Russia with Love Walther gun sells
The Walther air gun used in promotional photos for James Bondfilm From Russia with Love has sold wellat Sotheby's today (December 12).
Bond's real Walther had been forgotten for the shoot, but photographer David Hurn was on hand with a replacement
The air gun, which was used in "the most famous of all Bond images", sold for 121,250 ($195,672), sitting comfortably within its 100,000-150,000 estimate.
The gun is featured in the publicity shots for the 1963 film, which were then used for Goldfinger, Thunderball and You Only Live Twice. The air pistol itself belonged to photographer David Hurn and was used as a last-minute replacement, after it was discovered that nobody had brought Bond's smaller Walther PPK to the shoot.
Hurn himself noted that "the picture of Sean Connery holding the gun across his chest or alongside his face became the most famous of all Bond images".
Paul Fraser Collectibles is currently offering a fantastic example of Sean Connery's autograph and an autographed photo of Daniel Craig in Quantum of Solace.
