James Bond's Walther gun sets pulses racing at Sotheby's

James Bond's From Russia with Love Walther gun will auction for an estimated $238,500 at Sotheby's

James Bond's Walther air pistol, the gun featured in "the most famous of all Bond images", is estimated to achieve up to 150,000 ($238,621)in a Sotheby's London sale on December 12.

The air pistol will be sold together with its original presentation case, letter of provenance and a later reproduction photograph showing Sean Connery in unequivocal Bond pose, gun poised.

The publicity photographs for From Russia with Love, in which the Walther gun was used, carry considerable cultural cachet, while the pistol itself is an iconic artefact, imaginatively inseparable from the man who so famously wielded it.

Although the Walther was not originally intended to be used in the photographs, after the shots had been devised it was discovered that no one had thought to bring a gun along for Connery to pose with. David Hurn, the photographer entrusted to take the promo shots, recalls: "By chance it happened that I practised air pistol target shooting as a hobby and the pistol I used was a Walther."

Hurn's Walther was used in the final photos, despite its too-long barrel, which was never airbrushed out. As Hurn observes: "In theory Tom should have had the long barrel of the air pistol removed by airbrushing during the designing of the actual poster - in practice, for reasons, unknown, this was never done."

Bond memorabilia has already enjoyed a standout year, and looks set to continue.

A comprehensive collection of Bond posters, for example, is estimated to sell in Los Angeles for upwards of $200,000 next month.

Here at Paul Fraser Collectibles, we also have a superb range of Bond autographs available.
