Jaeger-LeCoultre watch auctions for $256,000 in New York

A Jaeger-LeCoultre watch highlighted the September 18 auction at Antiquorum

A Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Gyrotourbillon 2 was the highlight of an auction of Important Modern and Vintage Timepieces that took place on September 18 at Antiquorum in New York, selling for $255,750.

The 2008limited edition pink gold watch features a spherical tourbillon - a device invented in the 18th century by Swiss watchmaker Abraham Louis-Bregruet that mounts the escapement and balance wheel in a cage in order to counteract the effect of gravity on the mechanism.

Other modern wristwatches performed well at the sale - with a Grebel Foursey Double Tourbillon 30 Vision making $219,750 and a Hublot Flying Tourbillon Titanium PVD Coated watch realising $147,750.

A Swiss ladies gold pocket watch given to Queen Victoria's daughter, Princess Alice, on her 12th birthday sold for $26,250. The watch was designed by Aubert and Klaftenberger -a watchmakers based in Geneva and favoured by Prince Albert.

A carriage clock by Aubert and Klaftenberger circa 1855 sold for 13,200 ($21,096) against an 8,000-12,000 ($12,785-19,178) valuation at Sotheby's London in 2006.

Saori Omura, watch director at Antiquorum New York, commented: "Timepieces with exceptional provenance continue to attract global attention.

"We were delighted that the pocket watch given to Prince Alice by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert inspired highly competitive bidding, selling for an outstanding $26,250, over eight times its pre-auction estimate."
