Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso Gyrotourbillion 2 sees 21.1% increase in HK

Jaeger LeCoultre's pioneering Reverso Gyrotourbillion 2 watch saw excellent results on August 25

The Reverso Gyrotourbillion 2 once again proved itself the most sought-after watch produced by Jaeger LeCoultre, in a Hong Kong sale held on August 25.

Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso Gyrotourbillon 2 The cylindrical balance spring was thought to be too large to fit a wristwatch

The magnificent wristwatch is widely regarded as one of the finest ever made by the luxury Swiss brand and features a cylindrical balance spring to ensure the accuracy of its movement - an addition that was completely new to wristwatches upon its release in 2004.

Aside from this, the watch is also the most eye-catching in Jaeger LeCoultre's long-standing Reverso series, which is named for the unique feature of a reversible and detachableface that helps to guard against scratches, and means the Gyrotourbillion 2 can also be used as a pocket watch.

The example at auction, a highly desirable platinum version, was numbered 72 in a limited edition of 75, adding further to its appeal to top-end collectors. Boasting 373 parts and 58 jewels to keep its complex mechanisms moving, the spectacular timepiece sold for $242,397, 21.1% above its high estimate of $200,000.

Elsewhere in the sale there was a typically lavish example from Gerald Genta. A Skeleton model - reference 3019 - the watch featured a perpetual calendar and minute repeater, with its bezel set with 48 round cut diamonds.

A further 300 round cut diamonds decorated the 18k yellow gold bracelet, while mother of pearl ring dials for the date and days of the week, and a lapis lazuli aperture for the moon phases, adorned the face. With a pre-sale estimate of $45,000-58,000, the watch sold for $59,629.

Paul Fraser Collectibles is currently offering a Longines Olympic Series mens wristwatch - a classic design that will complement any collection. Visit our dedicated Watches and Jewellery section for more of the latest watch collecting and investment news.
