The Renaissance sale offers Jacopo Bassano's 'Shepherds' alongside the Rothschild Prayerbook

Jacopo Bassano's Adoration of the Shepherds, a highly important work from one of the greatest painters of 16th century Venice, will star alongside the Rothschild Prayerbook in Christie's Renaissance auction on January 29 in New York.

Bassano Adoration of the ShepherdsAccording to Christie's, Bassano stands alongside Titian, Tintoretto and Paolo Veronese

The piece holds an estimate of $8m-12m, bringing the total valuation for the sale to $50m. A key work in Bassano's oeuvre, it is a rare signed piece that originates from a transitional phase of his career, in which he moved away from mannerist works to his later style.

The piece has an esteemed provenance, having been housed in the famous Morrison collection of Renaissance works in the 19th century and then exhibited for a decade at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts.

Another depiction of the holy family by Lorenzo Lotto, another important Venetian artist, considered one of the masters of the high Renaissance, will sell with a $2m-3m estimate.

Christie's will also hold its Old Master Paintings Part I sale on January 29, while Sotheby's will offer Old Master Drawings, starring a pen and ink work from Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo.
