A large, naturalistically modelled ivory parrot okimono auctions for $55,500 at Bonhams

A remarkable ivory parrot okimono - a Japanese term meaning "ornament for display" -has auctioned for 37,250 ($55,487) in Edinburgh this afternoon (July 10).

Estimated to be worth 10,000, the ivory parrot auctioned at Bonhams with a 273% increase, testament to its scarcity.

The lovable ornithological specimen, carved as if in the midst of preening his feathers, measures 87cm including its stand.

Previous sales results suggest that demand for rare, novel Asian items is strong.

A spectaculararticulated hawk sculpturebrought 121,250 ($184,807) to Bonhams London in May, leading the auction house's sale of fine Japanese art.
