Italian cabinet sells for $24k, ten times its estimate

This ebonised 19th century collectors' cabinet decupled its pre-sale value at a New Jersey auction

An ebonised Italian collectors' cabinet from the 19th century has sold for almost ten times its lower pre-sale estimate at Rago Auctions.

Despite missing its base, the remarkable-looking cabinet bears pietra fronts on its multiple drawers. Its measurements are 25 1/2" x 46" x 15".

The Italian cabinet originally went to auction with a pre-sale estimated value of just $2,500-3,500.

This ebonised Italian collectors' cabinet sold for $24,400

Attracting enthusiastic bids, it left the auction block with a remarkable final hammer price of $24,400.

The second highest lot in Rago's sale was a Steinway piano and bench, manufactured in 1969. Estimated at $15,000-20,000, it eventually sold for $23,180.

The sale was held in New Jersey, last Saturday (March 20).

A Steinway piano also happens to be the second highest collectible piece of celebrity memorabilia in the world.

John Lennon's Steinway piano, used by theex-Beatleto write his legendary song, Imagine, was purchased by pop singer George Michael in 2000, for $2.1m.
