Important Banksy works set to star at Bonhams

Bonhams have announced that they will present a selection of works by iconic street artist Banksy at their April 17 Urban Art auction.

Some of Banksy’s most well known pieces will be represented. The star lot is a diptych canvas, Monkey Detonator. Typical of his humorous surrealism, the canvas pictures a determined monkey about to blow open a safe using bananas as dynamite. The canvas is expected to fetch £70,000-£100,000.

Kids on Guns, one of the artist’s more political endeavours, is rarely seen at auction. An example is offered at Bonhams, valued at £50,000-£70,000.

Flower Chucker is one of Banksy’s most recognised images, an anarchic rioter preparing to throw a bunch of flowers rather than the implied petrol bomb or other weapon. Bonhams describes the ‘anarchic yet wistful aesthetic’ that Banksy displays here. The piece is expected to fetch £10,000-£15,000.

Several of Banksy’s screenprints will be offered, including his Warhol-esque portrait of Kate Moss (2005). Three original stencil spray paint works will also be included, estimates ranging from £10,000 to £100,000.

While Banksy inevitably takes the spotlight at Urban Art auctions, his forerunners will also be showcased at Bonhams.

Street art greats from 1980s New York include Taki 183, Futura 2000, Blade and TKid. These artists were the first to take graffiti off the street and into the fine art gallery, paving the way for the current generation of successful street artists that have emerged across Europe, Banksy included.
