Iconic Japanese woodblock prints offered in online only auction

Christie's offers some of Japan's most iconic woodblock prints in August 7-ending auction

An iconic selection of Japanese woodblock prints is being sold in Christie's online only auction, which ends on August 7.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi's Horyu Tower from the Hakkenden (Tale of the Eight Dogs)

The auction features 146 of the most recognisable images from the traditional Japanese technique of woodblock printmaking, with estimates starting at just 600 ($1,010).

The highlight of the auction is an important English collection centred on Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861), one of the last great masters of the ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints. His Horyu Tower from the Hakkenden (Tale of the Eight Dogs), created circa 1840, is estimated at 5,000-7,000 ($8,4320-11,806)

Kuniyoshi's work occupies much of the sale, with Biography of Yoshitsune: Gojo Bridge at 4,000-6,000 ($6,746-10,119).

Kuniyoshi'speer Hiroshige also features in the sale - thetwo artists vie for the title of the last great master of ukiyo-e.

One Hundred Views of Famous Places of Edo (now Tokyo)is one of the most famous series of prints, inspired by Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji

Plum Estate, Kameido, from the series One Hundred Views of Famous Places of Edo - an instantly recognisable work to collectors of Japanese art - will sell with an 8,000-12,000 ($13,492-20,249)estimate.

Sudden Shower over Shin-Ohashi Bridge and Atake is valued at 8,000-10,000 ($13,492-16,865) .
