HR Giger's Dune chair may see $127,500 in Vue props auction

The HR Giger designed and owned chair was made for Dune, though never used

A chair designed and owned by Alien designer HR Giger for the 1984 movie adaption of Dune is the star lot at the Prop Store's latest sale in partnership with Vue Cinemas.

Giger's designs have been used for several films, adding a macabre atmosphere to sets

The auction offers a superb range of TV and film memorabilia, with the Back to the Future hoverboard and Terminator costume also going up for sale. The Giger chair, a rare piece displayed in his home, is estimated to sell for 60,000-80,000 ($95,739-127,652).

Giger, who died in May 2014, designed the Harkonnen "Capo" chair for use by the Baron Harkonnen in Alejandro Jodorowsky's adaption of Dune, a role that originally cast Orson Welles. However, funding fell through and director David Lynch took over, altering Giger's designs.

The piece was then used in Giger's famous home, which serves as a museum for his works, and was featured in several prominent exhibitions. With few of Giger's pieces on the private market, we could see strong bids from collectors keen to celebrate his career.

Joining the Giger chair are a number of items from Ridley Scott's hugely successful Alien films, for which HR Giger designed the monster itself as well as many of the backdrops.

The sled is mounted on a professional stand, making for a great display piece for Bond fans

The second highest bids of the sale will likely be seen by an underwatertow sled used by Spectre agents in the 1965 James Bond film Thunderball. Estimated at 20,000-30,000 ($31,913-47,869), the sled is made of fibreglass and has undergone a restoration, with the original paint work now applied.

The piece is consigned by Jordan Klein, who worked on the film's underwater vehicles and was allowed to keep the piece after production.
