'How to guarantee authenticity - sourcing unique antique collectible pieces'

Here's something I have been asked many times over 30 years: how to guarantee authenticity

If you arepurchasing at the top-level you need to know that the items are exactly as described.

Confidence and trustare essential in building a great collection.

Authentication is the key ingredient, and whereyou must rely on the dealers and auction houses expertise and knowledge, and get a guarantee that fully protects you and your purchase.

In next week's newsletter I will give you my"33 Top tips for authenticating Autographs" many of which are relevant across the full spectrum of Collectibles.

Grading of items, for all Collectibles, is also a must, and gaining universal acceptance of a single scale which is easy to understand and regulate.

If the grading process is more professional, it will create transparency, plus greater confidence and liquidity in the market.

This opens up the Collectible areas to more serious collectors and professional investors, and will naturally attach a premium price to the very highest graded items.

Also, there are many "Investment Funds" underway, and many more preparing to launch and raise money, and they would benefit greatly from this more structured approach.

In many Collecting fields both collectors and dealers tend to over-value, and over-grade their items.

I believe if the correct grading is achieved then the pricing will be more obvious and acceptable... more transparent to all involved.

It worked for rare coins...

Coin collecting embraced "certified" coins and "slabbing" in the eighties.

Coins are submitted to an independent third party firm, with a panel of experts who can cover all the necessary areas.

They will, for a flat fee, grade and encapsulate the coin in a tamper-proof holder.

The authenticity of the item and grade is then guaranteed by them, and a refund of the whole of the value of the item is payable if the item is later found not to be authentic in grade, attribute or price.

So, the certified coin has become an accurately described, guaranteed authentic, tradable commodity.

No re-examination is necessary on sale or transfer.

This makes the whole buying and selling process simple for all to be then totally involved with.

This had a very marked effect on prices in US coins of the highest grades, especially where exact quantities were known, and now there is also a history building on the 'population' within each grade.

The 'big money' will move away from sub-standard uncertified material, putting further upward pressure on prices in the high-grade certified material.

We are aiming to develop this service in the high-end Collectibles market, with as much input as we can from all the key players in each market.

Our belief is that the most important aspect for this service is to be able to guarantee the grading and pricing, and pay out the full amount if they are proved to be wrong in the future.

There are far too many traders issuing Certificates of Authenticity, who are very unlikely to be still in business in fifty years time, or maybe even five years time!

We are very keen to see this marketplace have a more regulated structure, which will improve the collecting hobby, and the experiences of all involved.

I need your help...

As Collectors I would value your feedback. Please email me any thoughts you might have on any of the above.

Also, we are planning to launch a full grading, pricing and authentication service with a full money back guarantee on the full value of the item.

Plus, we are intent on going one step further with the creation of a "Trading Floor" to actively buy and sell (prices will be advertised for buying and selling) a limited spread of the most traded collectibles.

We will bring you more news on this exciting project as soon as we can.

In the meantime if you need any assistance with your collection - perhaps you are looking for a unique item yourself - please feel free to contact us.
