Harry Potter first edition set makes $57,000 at Dreweatts and Bloomsbury

A complete set of Harry Potter first editions led a sale of rare books and manuscripts in London

A complete set of Harry Potter first editions in a wooden presentation chest has realised 35,000 ($57,249) at Dreweatts and Bloomsbury.

The collection sold as part of the Important Books, Manuscripts and Works on Paper auction that took place on November 28 in London.

All but the first book have their original dust jackets, with the second and third novels featuring the signature of cover artist Cliff Wright.

Each book is in mint condition and housed in custom morocco-backed drop back boxes, along with seven pieces of original art by the corresponding dust jacket artist.

Earlier this year a first edition copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone sold for a world record 150,000 ($227,993) at a charity auction at Sotheby's.

A set of 82 contemporary plates by William Hogarth (1697-1764) with manuscript changes in his own hand realised 18,000 ($29,401).

Hogarth was a major contributor to the development of political satire and credited with developing sequential art.

Dating to 1762, the collection includes the series of Harlot's Progress, Rake's Progress, Marriage a-la-mode and Idleness and Industry.

The folio is worn, with some plates detached from the contemporary binding, but is extremely rare in any condition and particularly with Hogarth's own handwriting.
