The $26.7m sale price smashed the previous world record for a flawless, colourless diamond in this category by more than $10m, Christie's Raul Kadakia told journalists following the sale.

The previous world record was set by an 18-carat Chloe round diamond;bought by Guess jeans founder Georges Marciano for $16.2m in 2007.

As the first ever buyer of the extraordinary African diamond, which was meticulously sculpted for 21 months before the sale, Harry Winston had the privilege of naming it. The diamond will be known as Harry Legacy - after the company's founderand one-time owner of the Hope Diamond, who passed away in 1978.

Nayla Hayek, newly appointed chief executive of Harry Winston, commented: "Diamonds are still a girl's best friend."
