Hans Wegner Papa Bear Chairs are original vintage chairs created by the designer Hans Wegner.

Brief history and description

Hans Wegner was born on April 2nd, 1914 and died on January 26th, 2007, and became one of the most well-known and popular Danish furniture designers during the mid-century Danish furniture design movement.

He invented the groundbreaking Papa Bear chair in 1951, but other popular designs include the Peacock Chair (1947), the Swivel Chair (1955), the Ox Chair (1960), and many more.

Also known as the "Teddy Bear Chair' Wegner's signature Papa Bear chair was initially manufactured with beech wood frames, and some came with a matching ottaman as well. For PP Mobler's 50th anniversary, the company reissued the Papa Bear chair and its matching ottoman.

Guide for collectors

Hans Wegner Papa Bear chairs that come with matching ottamans are considered to be rare, but not necessarily the most valuable, while Papa Bear chairs that are made out of leather, teak and oak are considered to be the most valuable.

Restoration of a Hans Wegner Papa Bear chair is recommended, but only if there is noticeable damage. However, restoring a Hans Wegner Papa Bear chair may decrease its value.
