A remarkable violin ascribed to Hannibal Fagnola has auctioned for 85,250 ($128,474) at Bonhams' London sale of fine musical instruments.

Estimated at 60,000, the 1930-dated instrument brought an impressive 42.1% increase.

Hannibal Fagnola violins are popular among auction-goers and musicians alike. The present Turin-made example boasts a deep red exterior and remains in fine condition.

A Fagnola violin dated 1928 sold for 115,250 ($173,661) at Sotheby's in October 2011. The average cost of such a violin is about 70,000 ($105,500).

Authenticated in 2013, the present violin last appeared at auction in 1980, at Sotheby's, where it sold for an undisclosed sum.
