H.P Lovecraft Books And Memorabilia are collectible items relating to the renowned author of cosmic horror H.P Lovecraft.

Brief history/biography

Howard Phillips Lovecraft (commonly known as H.P. Lovecraft) was born on August 20th, 1890 and died on March 15th, 1937.

Lovecraft penned numerous different horror, fantasy and science short stories, as well as poetry and essays as well. Many have coined Lovecraft's writing as "weird fiction," while Lovecraft himself declared his writing as "cosmic horror."

Some of Lovecraft's most famous work includes The Cats of Ulthar (1920), The Shunned House (1937), The Call of Cthulhu (1928), The Shadow Over Innsmouth (1936), and many more.

Many have said that Lovecraft was one of the most "influential horror writers of the 20th century" and author Stephen King called him "the twentieth century's greatest practitioner of the classic horror tale."

Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Texas sold:

  • A first edition copy of The Shadow Over Innsmouth (1936) for $6,000 in September of 2011.
  • A first edition copy of The Shunned House (1928) for $9,000 in October of 2008.
  • A first edition copy of The Outsider and Others (1939) for $3,250 in September of 2011.

Sotheby's in New York sold:

  • A first edition copy of The Shunned House (1928) along with a signed photograph of Lovecraft for $10,200 in June of 2005.
  • A first edition copy of The Shadow over Innsmouth (1936) for $14,400 in December of 2006.
  • A first edition copy of The Shunned House (1928) for $10,200 in December of 2006.
  • A first edition copy of The Cats of Ulthar (1935) for $15,600 in December of 2006.
  • A first edition copy of The Outsider and Others (1939) for $3,000 in December of 2006.
  • A first edition copy of The Battle that Ended the Century (1934) for $3,900 in December of 2006.

  • Bloomsbury Auctions in New York sold a first edition copy of The Shadow Over Innsmouth (1936) for $3,200 in November of 2007

Documents

Sotheby's in New York sold:

  • An autographed manuscript of Under the Pyramids for $24,000 in December of 2006.
  • An autographed manuscript of The Shunned House for $45,000 in December of 2006.
  • Fifty letters include 38 signed by Lovecraft (circa 1931) for $48,000 in December of 2006.
  • An autographed manuscript of The Materialist Today for $5,400 in December of 2006.

  • PBA Galleries in San Francisco, California sold a collection of rare books, catalogs and documents written by Lovecraft, some of which include The Outsider and Others (1939), Supernatural Horror in Literature (1927), and Beyond the Wall of Sleep (1943) for $9,000 in February of 2008.

  • Bloomsbury Auctions in London sold the original typescript of Fungi from Yuggoth (circa 1930) for £4,400 in July of 2006.

Guide for collectors

First edition copies of The Shunned House (1928) and The Shadow over Innsmouth (1936) are considered to be more valuable than any other first edition copies of Lovecraft's work.

Memorabilia that was once signed by Lovecraft is also considered valuable.

Restoration of a first edition copy of Lovecraft's work or autographed manuscripts and letters is not recommended.
