Julien’s Auctions have announced an exceptional auction, preceded by a world tour, of a large amount of property from the estate of Hollywood legend and style icon Greta Garbo.

Considered by many as the most beautiful woman of the 20th century, Greta Garbo was a symbol of style and elegance, and captivated the public with her movie performances. She was one of the few stars to traverse successfully from silent films to talkies, and became a powerful force within Hollywood.

She has been termed ‘the first modern woman’, and was a role model to women around the world in her campaign for equivalent pay and women’s rights issues, standing up to her studio bosses and battling for equality. Her impact and fascination endures.

Garbo represented the epitome of beautiful modern screen heroines. She is a classic fashion icon, her style vastly imitated throughout her life. Greta was the first woman to appear in the clothing and accessories of numerous designers including Emilio Pucci, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Hubert Givenchy. Many of these pieces will be offered by Julien’s, along with speciality accessories, luggage and clothing purchased by the star.

The auction will also include a vast array of clothing designed by Valentina Schlee specifically for Greta Garbo. An additional angle of interest is present in these pieces, as Garbo had an affair with Schlee’s husband when they were living next door to each other.

Other highlights will include a selection of photographs from Greta’s personal collection of Hollywood studio portraits of herself by various notable photographers, as well as furniture, art and decor from her New York apartment and Swedish manor house, including her self-designed bed, as well as personal books, albums, documents, and signed items.
