Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford's jewellers appear in Skinner's Boston sale

Rare Art Deco and Alexandrite gems will be going under the hammer in this US auction, next month

Skinner, Inc. will host a sale of fine jewellery at its Boston gallery on September 13.

The sale will feature a broad range of collections, including two pieces by Paul Flato, the noted 1930s jeweller to movie stars like Greta Garbo, Katharine Hepburn and Joan Crawford.

From a New York estate, lot 630 is an Art Deco platinum, burma sapphire and diamond ring. Accompanied by the original receipt from Flato's salon, the estimated auction value is $25,000 to $35,000.

Auctioning slightly later, as part of lot 634, is this Art Deco Platinum, Emerald and Diamond Ring by Raymond Yard jewellers of New York. It is estimated at $20,000-30,000.

Cartier jewellery featured throughout the sale

Cartier makes a strong appearance at the upcoming sale. The back cover of the auction catalogue features lot 635, a striking Cartier platinum and diamond strap bracelet with the original box estimated to be worth $100,000 to $150,000.

Fine diamonds

In true Skinner fashion, there will be a spectacular assortment of diamonds offered at the September 13 auction, including a variety of engagement rings ranging from 1.00 carat to over 6.00 carats,among thema beautiful pear-shaped diamond pendant weighing 6.45 carats. Lot 390 is estimated at $25,000 to $35,000.

Alexandrites

Alexandrites are mined in Russia and change colour depending on the light source. The sought after stones turn green in daylight and red in incandescent light. Alexandrites were named in honour of the young Tsar Alexander II.

The stone is usually found in small sizes under 1.00 carat, rarely is it seen over 5.00 carats.

There are three Alexandrite lots coming up in the fine jewellery sale including lot 579, which is an Edwardian alexandrite and diamond pendant/brooch, set with a cushion-cut alexandrite of approximately 7.27 carats. It is estimated at $10,000 to $15,000.

Lot 580 is an Edwardian alexandrite and diamond ring, set with a cushion-cut alexandrite weighing approximately 7.67 carats, and is estimated at $10,000 to $15,000.
