Greek bronze minotaur figure to auction in London

The Greek bronze figure of the minotaur will cross the block at Timeline Auctions next month

A third century BC Greek bronze figure of a minotaur carries an estimate of 5,000-7,000 ($8,289-11,605) ahead of a sale at Timeline Auctions in London on September 3.

The myth of the minotaur proved fertile ground for Grecian sculptors, particularly from the archaic period (circa 800-480 BC) onward.

The 14cm-high work is mounted on a stand with an inscription that reads "Coll. General Cesnola / Am. Consul Gen. / Crete / Sotheby's 1892".

Luigi Palma di Cesnola was the first head of the Metropolitan Museum in New York and a major collector of ancient Greek artefacts.
