Great Train Robbery collection a steal at $4,500 with Dominic Winter

A photo collection by a detective involved with the Great Train Robbery sells on September 25

A collection of photographs, notes and cuttings from the Great Train Robbery, compiled by a detective who worked on the case, will sell in Dominic Winter Auctioneers' latest auction,on September 25 in the UK.

The archive, put together by Detective Constable John Bailey, is expected to sell for 2,000-3,000 ($3,162-4,744).

Bailey worked for the Buckinghamshire police photograph and fingerprint department from 1963, the year that the Great Train Robbery was staged. An infamous event in British history, the robbery saw 2.6m stolen from a Royal Mail train near Mentmore, Buckinghamshire.

The collection contains 185 vintage black and white slides from photographs that Bailey took of the crime scene, trial and the personnel involved in the case. These are presented with 20 sheets of information prepared by Bailey, as well as 11 sheets of newspaper cuttings and other items.

Until recently, Bailey was a lecturer on crime scene photography, and the lot is accompanied by an index from his lectures as well as accompanying poster-size exhibition cards.
