Graff Vivid Yellow diamond stars at $25m with Sotheby's

Sotheby's is auctioning the 100-carat Graff Vivid Yellow diamond in Geneva

Weighing in at an impressive 100.09 carats, the Graff Vivid Yellow diamond will provide the dazzling highlight of Sotheby's May 13 auction in Geneva.

Graff Vivid Yellow diamond

With the auction house leading in the sale of diamonds, the Graff Vivid Yellow will surely attract Sotheby's top customers, holding an estimate of $15.3m-25.4m.

It is one of the largest yellow diamonds in the world, and is listed as such in the go-to reference book Famous Diamonds (2008) by Ian Balfour.

Judging by the estimate set by Sotheby's experts, it will comfortably surpass the 110.03 carat "Lady Dalal" that set the $12.3m record for a yellow diamond at the auction house in 2011.

Cushion cut, the Graff Vivid Yellow is currently mounted on a ring, but can be detached to be worn as a pendant.

Also starring is a 70.33 white diamond, also mounted as a ring, which is expected to sell for between $12m and $16.1m.

It has been graded D Colour, Flawless Clarity, the highest rating given by the Gemological Institute of America, and is also part of the rare Type IIa subgroup, a title afforded to less than 2% of all gem diamonds.

The Type IIa subgroup means that the diamond is chemically pure and has "extraordinary optical transparency", according to Sotheby's.

As ever, Christie's and Sotheby's will go head to head in Geneva, with Christie's offering the world's largest flawless blue diamond on May 14.
