Global bids push 'one-off' Vincent motorcycle to $177,000 at Bonhams

Bidders from Norway, Mexico, India and beyond showed their love for two-wheeled classics...

Here's another quick look at Bonhams' recent annual sale of Collectors' Motorcycles and Related Memorabilia at The Classic MotorCycle Show in Stafford, UK.

Two wheeled classics once again gave the four wheeled variety a run for its money - overall, the Easter Sunday (April 24) sale netted 2m, with 93% of lots sold.

Alongside the sale's leading lot, a 1934 Brough Superior SS100, was an eclectic mix of machines that encompassed almost the entire span of motorcycle development - ranging from the 1902 Griffon to the 1998 Ducati 916SPS 'Fogarty Replica'.

Vincents are always in demand and this sale provided plentiful opportunities for devotees of the Stevenage, UK, marque to expand their collections. In fact, there were no fewer than 11 consigned.

The 1955 Series D Victor prototype - the only one of its kind

As expected, the top performer was the 1955 Series D Victor prototype, the only one of its kind ever made. It sold for a premium-inclusive 107,100 ($177,013). This was more than double its top estimate of 50,000.

Offered from the same private collection, the 1949 Black Shadow Series C fetched 68,600, while the totally dismantled 1951 Comet 'project' made 9,200.

Meanwhile, the sale confirmed the growing worldwide interest in collectors' bikes.

A worldwide audience took part, with bidders representing almost every European Union country plus the USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Hong Kong, South Africa, Switzerland, Norway, Mexico and India.

The auction was also notable as the first at Stafford to include live bidding via the Internet.
