Georgia Tech 222-0 ball makes $40,500 at SCP Auctions

The ball used in Georgia Tech's 222-0 victory against Cumberland sold on August 24

The football used in Georgia Tech's legendary 222-0 defeat of Cumberland in 1916 has sold to an alumnus who plans to donate it to the university.

The lot achieved $40,338 at SCP Auctions during an online auction for a local youth charity on August 24, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

The buyer, Ryan Schneider, told the publication: "I think this is my red car for midlife crisis.

"It just wasn't about anybody but me at the time and me giving back to Tech. Frankly, if I had told my wife or kids, they probably would have told me I was completely insane, which they did tell me afterwards."

The game was the first in the history of college football to exceed 200 points and remains a record.

It pitted a team from Cumberland made up of non-players against a well-drilled Georgia Tech side.
