A striking George Ohr (1857-1918)pottery vessel sold for $47,500 at US auction house Rago Arts and Auction Center on June 8.

George Ohr potAmerican potter George Ohrs works are highly sought after. The best, hand-thrown examples generally achieve five figure sums at auction

Known as the "Mad Potter of Biloxi" in recognition of his energetic, experimental creations, as well as his extrovert personality (he is said to have knotted his extraordinarily long moustache behind his head while working), Ohr's work is considered highly collectible today.

Testament to this, a superb George Ohr oversized pitcher sold for $40,000 in February 2012.

The present vase features a sponged-on red glaze as well as a distinctive folded rim.

A rare Martin Brothers tobacco jar and Tiffany Studios lantern also put in strong performances, bringing $43,750 and $27,500, respectively.

Rago Arts and Auction Center's David Rago comments: "The sale as a whole did very well, hammering at 98% of its aggregate low estimate.

"Modern ceramics performed exceedingly well".
