George Mikan 1948 Bowman PSA 10
The George Mikan 1948 Bowman PSA 10 sold for $218,500 in 2009. It is the most expensive basketball trading card ever sold.
The 1948 trading card from the Bowman Gum Company set is in perfect condition.
The card depicts the bespectacled Mikan in his Minneapolis Lakers uniform.
It was the only mainstream basketball set produced until Topps issued its 1957 collection.
Mikan, nicknamed Mr Basketball, played for the Chicago American Gears and the Minneapolis Lakers in a professional career stretching from 1946 to 1956.
The six foot, 10 inch center helped smooth the way for a greater acceptance of tall players in the game.
The card changed hands in the 1990s for $32,000, when it was sold by SCP Auctions.
In December 2009, SCP Auctions purchased it on behalf of one of its clients for $218,500.
“Yes, that was a lot of dollars 12 years ago for a basketball card," David Kohler, the president of SCP Auctions, told Sports Collectors Daily.
"But as the market grew …we knew it would be a six figure card some day."
