George Gershwin (1898-1937), the American composer, wrote pieces for Broadway and the classical concert hall, along with popular songs for the wider public. His music was used on both television and in films, and his musical legacy was honoured with a posthumous Academy Award nomination at the 1937 Oscars for Best Original Song.
