George Daniels’ renowned Watch Collection to sell at Sotheby’s

Sotheby’s have announced the forthcoming sale of the George Daniels’ Horological Collection, scheduled for November 6, 2012.

George Daniels is regarded as the most important horologist of the 20th century, and is the only watchmaker in history to have been awarded both the CBE and the MBE for his services to horology.

From his earliest years as a trade watch repairer in South London, Daniels became renowned for his skills and went on to build 30 hand-made watches. His lasting legacy is the Daniels ‘Co-Axial’ escapement which he designed to run unaffected by the deterioration of its own lubricant.

Throughout his life Daniels acquired a remarkable collection of timepieces featuring work from the finest craftsmen of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries along with pieces of his own design. This collection, comprising 130 lots, will be offered at Sotheby’s with a combined estimated value of around £5 million.

Geoffroy Ader, European Head of Watches at Sotheby’s commented:

“It is a huge honour to present George Daniels' personal collection featuring watches and clocks of key periods of horology history. George Daniels was a Master watchmaker and this single owner sale is a unique opportunity to celebrate his extraordinary contribution to watchmaking. We look forward to sharing our enthusiasm with many collectors around the world”.
