Generous sellers offer complete stamp collections in $577,462 sale

The markets are looking positive for whole-collection sales, judging by the success of this auction...

There's been plenty of excitement over the various high-profile collectionswhich have appeared for sale on the markets recently, like Spink's upcoming mammoth sales of the incredible Chartwell Collection.

Yet it's easy to forget that there is often resistance on the part of many auction vendors when it comes to offering their collections intact, as complete collections, for sale by auction.

But these anxieties were nowhere to be seen in Warwick and Warwick's sale which took place on May 4. The auction contained many single country collections, both in its British Commonwealth and foreign sections.

Many of these were offered intact and borefour figure estimates. And, in the end, the vast majority sold at figures way above their estimates.

Among them was an old time collection of Australia containing mint and used issues to 1936, estimated at 3,500. The final result was 6,325 including the buyer's premium.

Meanwhile, a Hong Kong Q.V. to early Q.E. II collection withmint or used, estimated at 2,700, made 4,140. And a New Zealand Q.V. to 1936mint orused collection was estimated at 2,000 and achieveda remarkable result of 6,612.

Especially impressive was a collection of German States. Formed several decades ago, the collection was broken down into the individual states - though no stamps were offered individually.

Collectively, the estimates totalled 11,650 - yet the total of the realisationsnearly doubled this at20,757.

The collector had clearly been busy, having also formed a similar collection of Italian States, whichalso appeared for sale. Its estimate was 10,850 and the total realisation was 13,903.

In total, the general all-world auction realised just under 350,000 ($577,462) overall. The sale was held in Warwickshire, UK. Watch this space for more highlights.
