The costume is a dark blue wool Navy sailor’s costume with medals and a white cotton sailor’s hat, with the handwritten label “Gene Kelly” from the MGM costume department.
It is worn by Kelly playing the character of Joseph Brady, who along with fellow sailor Clarence Doolittle (Frank Sinatra) takes four days of shore leave in Hollywood, California and attempts to help an aspiring singer (Kathryn Grayson) get an audition at the MGM Studios.
The film also features a celebrated fantasy sequence in which Kelly dances with the animated Jerry Mouse from the Tom and Jerry cartoons.
In June 2011 the costume was placed up for sale as part of the Debbie Reynolds Collection of Hollywood costumes and props by Beverly Hills auction house Profiles in History. It had an estimated price of $8,000 - $12,000. It sold for a price of $33,825.
