A suit worn by Gene Kelly in musical Singin' in the Rain's signature scenehas sold for $106,250 at Heritage Auctions in Dallas.

It headlined the Entertainment and Music Memorabilia Signature Auction, achieving a 431.2% increase on a $20,000 estimate.

We felt the suit was significantly undervaluedprior to the sale, due to its enormous significance as a piece of film history.

Gene Kelly Singin RainSingin' in the Rain was released in 1952

The suit, labelled "Metro-Goldwyn-May/Gene Kelly/No. 1546-8565", still displays the water marks from the iconic sequence that has become one of the most beloved scenes in film history.

The suit was bought for just $10 at an MGM Studios auction in 1970 by Gerald Sola, a retired postal-worker, who commented prior to the auction: "I took it off the rack and looked at it. I noticed right away that there were water stains in the jacket. I knew right away what it was from so I bought it."

Around 75 fully signed copies of the record are known to exist, making it the most widely available example. We have this signed copy of A Hard Day's Night, which is significantly rarer - with only 8-10 examples known.
