Gandhi memorabilia sold at auction

A pair of items presented to his friend Emma Harker have gone under the hammer in London

Emma Harker met Gandhi in India as a result of her son-in-law being in the Indian civil service.

They are known to have met at least three times, and letters they exchanged suggests their friendship was quite close - so much so that Gandhi was content for her to smoke during one of their meetings.

The items sold today are a 33cm tall figure of a Buddhist deity, possibly Avalokitesvara, The Bodhisattva of Compassion seated in the lotus position, apparently made of gilded bronze, and a book 'Out of Dust' by D.F.Karaka, in which there is a simple, handwritten note in green ink: "with love M K Gandhi".
