A fuchsia Hermes Birkin bag and bracelet was the top lot in Christie's auction of Vintage Couture and Luxury Handbags,held on November 13 in London.

The bag and matching bracelet, made from alligator, sold for 50,000 ($79,400), making an 11.1% increase on its high estimate of 45,000.

The Hermes Birkin is the most sought after bag for fashion collectors. Named after actress and singer Jane Birkin, it has been seen in the hands of many top celebrities and has become a design icon.

The sale also featured a number of Disney-inspired dresses created by top designers, which were sold to benefit London's Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity. Leading was Versace's interpretation of Cinderella's famous dress in gold silk, which sold for 4,375 ($6,948).

Following was a Ralph and Russo eau de nil silk evening gown inspired by Princess Tiana from the Princess and the Frog, which sold for 3,350 ($5,161). A Jenny Packham silk crepe gown interpretation of the dress worn by Rapunzel in Tangled shared the 3,250 price.

The second highest bids came from a 1939 Schiaparelli black velvet evening jacket, embroidered with mirror-work baroque panels and twisted gold foil foliate scrolling. It sold for 47,500 ($75,430), just topping its 45,000 high estimate.

Elsa Schiaparelli (1890-1973) was one of the most prominent designers of her day, rivalling Coco Chanel.
