Francis Bacon's paintbrushes estimated at $38,500

A set of Irish artist Francis Bacon's paintbrushes, estimated at $38,500, will auction in September

A set of figurative artist Francis Bacon's paintbrushes, estimated at 25,000 ($38,515), are to cross the podium later this year.

Bacon bestowed the paintbrushes, which have never appeared at auction previously, upon fellow artist Clive Barker in 1978.

Contained within a paint-splattered butterbean tin housed inside a Perspex box, the eight, oil paint-caked brushes represent a rare and intensely personal proposition for those invested in the art market.

Set to star at Christie's Out of the Ordinary auction on September 5, the paintbrushes are guaranteed to garner international interest.

Christie's Charlotte Young insisted: "Out of the Ordinary is a tightly curated one-off sale offering a unique opportunity to acquire something a little different from Christie's.

"Each lot has been selected as either visually striking or with an intriguing story to tell, and many have never before been seen at auction."

Bacon's expressive, often troubling canvases are extremely sought after. In June 2013, Bacon's 1949 work Head III sold for 10.4m ($16m), while the world-renowned artist's triptych portrait of his muse and lover Isobel auctioned for 11.2m ($17.3m) last month.

The art market continues to grow. Increasingly, even exceptionally wealthy individuals find themselves unable to meet the expense of major works by "blue chip" artists. Those with considerable insight and imagination, however, are able to side step such difficulties, snapping up tangible assets pertaining to the careers of world famous artists at "bargain" prices.

Here at Paul Fraser Collectibles, we too have a number of fascinating artworks and art collectibles in stock, including this outstanding Pablo Picasso signed postcard and this Pierre August Renoir autographed letter.
