FOSSILIZED ORTHOCERAS- a fossil specimen
The orthoceras was one of the first cephalopods with a elongated chambered shell. Paleontologists estimate the beginning of the their existence at between 505 and 523 million years ago. The primitive elongated shell of the orthoceras was not as functional as the later-developed coiled shells of cephalopods and gastropods. This is undoubtedly a major reason the orthoceras became extinct. It was originated from Morocco.
