Follow the rabbit... $240,000 'modern rarity' coin sells in Hong Kong

Described as being in a 'brilliant mint state', this Year of the Rabbit classic will be auctioned in April

A bit of luck never goes amiss in an auction saleroom, and collectors have a chance to acquire somefrom this coin when it sells at Baldwin's Hong Kong Coin Auction 50 on April 7.

Not only does the lot include the Certificate Number 8, it is also a coin of the Year of the Rabbit... or 1999 to westerners.

In Chinese culture the number 8 is regarded as the most auspicious of all the numbers, signifying wealth and prosperity; while the rabbit is deemed to be the most fortunate of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals, bringing luck to individuals and businesses alike.

 A modern rarity: the 1999 Gold Proof 2000Yuan 1Kilogram coin

Only 15 examples of this Gold Proof 2000Yuan 1Kilogram coin were ever minted. This specimen will be sold in its original case of issue, and is described as being in a "brilliant mint state."

Baldwin's will be hopeful that this modern rarity with a most auspicious number will prove to be a good omen for its Hong Kong auction. It will appear for sale with a pre-sale estimate of $200,000240,000.
