The dust jacket significantly increases the value of the book, as very few have survived. They were slightly oversized, meaning that most show chipping and other damage.

The bookdisplays the lowercase "j" in Jay Gatsby corrected in ink on the back, and the various tell-tale misprintings in the text that identify it as the first edition.

Fitzgerald was very taken with the design, telling his publisher in a letter: "For Christ's sake don't give anyone that jacket you're saving for me. I've written it into the book."

Earlier this year a copy with an unrestored dust jacket in particularly good condition sold for $377,000 at Sotheby's New York.

According to the PFC40 First Edition Books Index, the value of a good copy has grown by 9.9% pa between 2004 and 2014.
