First South African stamps to auction in Johannesburg today

The stamps were first issued in the British colony of South Africa in 1853

An 1858 cover featuring the first stamps ever printed in South Africa is estimated to make $65,819-84,624 at Stephan Welz & Co in Johannesburg today.

The lot consists of two 1d pale brick-red and one 1855 one shilling yellow green stamps.

SA stamps Cape The figure depicted in the design is the Lady of Good Hope, a South African national symbol

Savo Tufegdzic, head of the stamp and coins department at the auction house, told the Daily Telegraph newspaper: "Now people collect stamps just like art and gold, it's an investment."
