Ferrari and Maserati set amazing 2m World Records in Monaco

The 1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica and Maserati 'Birdcage' raced to success at RM's auction

RM's inaugural Sporting Classics of Monaco auction, held at the Grimaldi Forum on May 1, saw five exceptionalautomobilesrealise prices in excess of 2m, including two new World Records.

With Ferrari, Maserati and BMW among the top sales, RM Auctions has proudly described its sale as "one of the most successful automobile auctions ever held."

Registered bidders came from 33 different countries on the telephone, over the internet and assembled in the standing-room-only venue.

New bidders represented 28% of all registrations, according to RM. In addition, approximately 3,300 people watched the live streaming video coverage of the sale over the Internet.

The event's top seller was a rare 1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica Cabriolet Pininfarina SWB. It set a new World Record for a Superamerica at 2,800,000 ($3,799,600), well above its 2,450,000 high estimate.

Meanwhile, a rare 1960 Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage also set a new World Record for a Birdcage at 2,464,000 ($3,343,648).

Away from the auction block, the sale's cover car, the 1937 BMW 328 MM Bgelfalte (pictured top right), exchanged hands less than 24 hours after the sale's conclusion for a confidential and unpublished sum.

Overall, 88 of the 105 pre- and post-war motor cars changed hands to produce an 86% sell-through rate, and the event achieved 33,235,917 ($45,101,139) in total sales.
