Philip II AV Half StaterPhilip II AV Half Stater

Greek, Roman and Byzantine coins will highlight the varied sale, with lots from China, USA and host country, Germany. The top lot of the auction will be the Phillip II of Macedon AV Half Stater dating from 340-328 BC. This 14mm coin depicts a youthful Greek king, who was the father of Alexander the Great. It was Philip II who sent the message, "You are advised to submit without further delay, for if I bring my army into your land, I will destroy your farms, slay your people, and raze your city." to the Spartans, prompting their characteristically laconic response, "If."The coin, which bears an image of a lion on the reverse, is expected to make 20,000 ($26,233) at auction. A second coin shares this estimate, this time from the Byzantine Empire. It bears a remarkably clear image of Michael I Rangabes, who enjoyed a short reign as emperor for just two years (811-813 AD). Michael I abdicated his throne after rumours of conspiracy reached him. He went on to become a monk, increasing the worth and rarity of this exquisite coin. It is one of two coins from short-lived Byzantine reigns. The second, a 797-802 AD solidus, was created during the reign of Irene of Athens, who sat as the Byzantine Empress Regnant for just five years. Its estimate is set at 10,000. Here at Paul Fraser Collectibles, we have our own fantastic range of rare coinsavailable to purchase, including this rare Italian Renaissance gold coin.
