Extremely rare 1858 Colt could sell for $16k

This scarce and sought-after Dragoon pistol, marked 'Col. Colt London', is auctioning online

An extremely rare Colt third model shoulder stock provision Dragoon pistol, made in 1858, will be among the highlights at a forthcoming militaria sale.

Only a handful of Dragoon pistols marked "Col. Colt London" on the barrel are known to exist.

In fair condition, it will auction with an estimate of $4,500-$16,000.

The weapon bears all the correct characteristics of a third model Dragoon, including the detachable stock hardware patented by Colt, and two extra lug screws on the frame.

The pistol has a 7.5 inch barrel, with a correct two-leaf sight which was added by Colt only for shoulder stock models.

Every screw and inch of the pistol has been inspected and deemed correct. The cylinder bears the rare marking, "Model U.S.M.R. 17482 Colt's Patent."

"This is an extremely rare Dragoon that would be a highlight of any collection," said the auctioneers, SoldUSA.

The gun retains overall good firing, according to the sellers, and functions well in dry operations.

It will be among number of highlights -along witha rare group of distinguished medals given to the ace World War One German pilot Adolf Ritter von Tutschek - to feature in SoldUSA's online sale.

The organisers are billing the auction as "the largest militaria auction to come to market in the last five years."
