A first edition copy of Ernest Hemingway's In Our Time has sold for $25,000 at Heritage Auctions.

The lot was among the highlights of the April 2 Rare Books Signature Auction in New York.

Hemingway moved to Paris with his first wife, Hadley Richardson, in 1921 - where he worked as an international correspondent for the Toronto Star and wrote fiction in his spare time.

Many of the most significant writers of the era, including James Joyce and F Scott Fitzgerald, were resident in the city during the 1920s.

In 1923, a suitcase containing all of the work he had produced in Paris was stolen from the Gare de Lyon.

He was forced to rewrite all the stories that he had worked on for the past two years. The result was In Our Time, a collection of vignettes and short stories.

The book is one of only 170 hand-numbered editions printed in Paris in 1924 by the renowned modernist publishing group Three Mountains Press.

The structure and content of the work would change dramatically before its publication in New York in 1925.
