Merrick (1862-1890) is now known to have suffered from Proteus syndrome, a condition whereby bones develop abnormally and tumours grow all over the body.

The chair, which was designed to recline by 45 degrees to allow Merrick to rest his head, was made for him by Edward Charles Taylor, a worker at the Royal London Hospital where Marrick lived out the last years of his life.

The two struck up a friendship, with Taylor often playing the violin to Merrick - who bequeathed Taylor the chair when he died.

We have a range of historical memorabilia available.
